Tesla has strong brand loyalty, but Rivian and Lucid are beginning to lure some Tesla owners away, according to a new study from S&P Global Mobility. Most Tesla owners stay with the brand, the study found. A whopping 72.8% of Model 3 owners replace their cars with another Tesla, as do 59.9% of Model S owners. The production ramp of the facelifted Tesla Model 3 at Gigafactory Shanghai appears to be in full swing judging by the thousands of vehicles that are populating the site’s export lot. California is spending $38 million to help expand availability of EV fast-charging for low-income and disadvantaged communities. The California Energy Commission (CEC), the state’s energy regulator, is now accepting applications for rebates that can be put toward the cost of installing DC fast-chargers with a minimum power rate of 150 kw by businesses, nonprofits, tribes, and public entities in 28 counties across the state. Toyota on Thursday provided an update on its battery development plans, including a more detailed roadmap for the rollout of solid-state batteries. The automaker has five next-generation battery designs, including both liquid and solid electrolytes. Toyota expects the solid-state batteries, which the company has been researching with Panasonic, to be “ready for commercial use” by 2027 or 2028, according to a company press release. Rivian appears to be the strongest young EV startup in the United States right now, noticeably outpacing other new brands. According to the registration data from Experian (via Automotive News), Rivian’s new EV registrations in July amounted to 2,783, which is above the monthly average of 2,596 in the first half of the year.
