The previous target was for the figure to reach 40 percent by 2030 and 50 percent by 2035. China has set a new target for the development of new energy vehicles (NEVs), as their penetration grows beyond initial expectations. China’s goal is to strive for 45 percent of new vehicles added to be NEVs by 2027, according to a State Council document released by the official Xinhua News Agency on January 11. As the news of Hertz’s fire sale on previously rentable Teslas makes its way through the news cycle, the rental giant has also quietly announced that it’s pivoting more toward traditional gas-powered vehicles in the future. The company says that it is “rebalancing” the numbers in its fleets, which means selling off a third of its EV fleet and replacing those cars with ICE models.  According to Automotive News, Hertz said that it expects to sell off 20,000 cars in its EV stock, and that process already started as early as last month. The cash generated from the sales of its…

Toyota confirmed plans to launch solid-state EV batteries with 10-minute fast charging and up to 750 miles (1,200 km) WLTP range to close the gap with Tesla. However, with the new EV battery tech still a few years out, Toyota could fall further behind. Toyota has been teasing solid-state EV battery tech for several years now. After discovering a “technological breakthrough” in June, Toyota said it was accelerating development. At present, most electric bicycles still make use of a physical connection between the rider’s legs and the rear wheel being driven. Either via chain, or more recently gaining popularity, via belt, e-bike motors retain a semblance of real biking, as the rider is either required to pedal for the motor to run, or has the option of pedaling when they choose to do so. We’ve talked about so-called digital drives in the past, and quite a few manufacturers…
